The figures are just some of the stats in the latest Jersey in Figures booklet, which reveals that 2013 was a shocking year for the Island’s fishermen, who landed less than half the amount of fish they managed in 2012.

But milk production was up – Jersey cows produced between then 13.4 million litres of milk, ultimately worth around £12.7 million.

The stats include:

  • The number of chickens has risen by an astonishing 48% between 2007 and 2013, and there are now 27,930 chickens in Jersey.
  • The number of pigs has dropped from 620 to 480 in the last five years, but the number of goats remains steady at 20.
  • Jersey’s sheep population is on the rise – there were 1,140 of the woolly blighters in 2013, compared to 860 in 2009.
  • The number of bass seems to be on a sharp decrease, from 19 tonnes in 2008 to just nine tonnes in 2013.
  • But 2012 seems to have been a freakishly good year for sea bream – the figures record that 86 tonnes were landed in 2012, instead of the usual figure, which is around ten.
