A 60-year-old woman drove while over two-and-a-half times the legal alcohol limit, and had a head-on crash with a car carrying a three-year-old boy.

The driver of the other car and his three-year-old nephew were shocked but otherwise unhurt in the collision, the Magistrate’s Court heard.

But driver Helen Margaret Dee suffered a broken forearm, a cut to the head, and was bleeding from her nose.

She was taken to Hospital by ambulance where a sample of blood showed she had 214 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal maximum is 80 micrograms.

St Lawrence Centenier Norman Laverack, prosecuting, said the crash took place on the evening of 18 October last year.

He said another motorist had seen Dee driving her blue Hyundai erratically along La Rue du Galet.

“The witness said she was weaving quite a lot and not keeping to a straight line,” the Centenier said.

“She bounced off the kerb two or three times.”

Her car was badly damaged in the collision but the other car, an Audi, sustained only minor damage.

Sentencing was postponed until 4 April to allow time for a background report.

Dee was released on bail and given an interim driving ban.
