Public events in Jersey could soon face new rules on how they deal with rubbish and recycling, after the Infrastructure Minister said he would raise the issue with the panel responsible for approving events.

Constable Andy Jehan was responding to a written question from Deputy Hilary Jeune about whether there are any requirements in place to ensure effective and sustainable waste management during public events.

The Minister said his department currently has “no specific powers to require, approve, or place waste management plans upon event organisers”, but agreed the issue was important.

“The point raised in the question is a very valid one and I will raise this with the Bailiff’s Public Entertainment Panel to see if this can be included for future events,” he said.

At present, organisers must submit an event management plan to the panel covering the type of event, layout, a risk assessment and how they plan to reduce nuisance such as noise.

Constable Jehan’s response clarified that while plans may include some waste-related conditions if required by the parish or landowner, there is no formal requirement for them to include recycling or other environmental measures.
