Within these quarters, residents will be encouraged to come together to find ways to improve the lives of everyone who lives there.
This could be, for example, removing parking spaces to plant more trees, adding play equipment, restricting traffic or organising events.
The five areas are:
Lewis Street area, including Kensington Street and Road
Poonah Road area, including Pomona Road and Lane
Dorset Street area, including Clairvale Road, Clearview Street and Columbus Street
Stopford Road area, including Janvrin Road and St. Mark’s Road
Havre des Pas area, including Cleveland Road (south) and Roseville Street (south)
The parish intends to prepare some possible schemes before taking them out to consultation. If and when ideas are agreed, it is hoped they will be implemented next year.
The five areas were approved at a St Helier Roads’ Committee meeting this week.
Constable Simon Crowcroft said he hoped the scheme would be a “tremendous opportunity” for residential areas to become vibrant places led by their own “street champions”.
He added that, with the Jersey Development Company spending many millions of pounds on the Waterfront, it was imperative that the north of the parish received significant investment too.
“Although the JDC’s South-West St Helier plan is amazing, we cannot let that be the only game in town,” he said.
