Although no one has handed over their bank details or lost any money yet, the police say that could change soon.

The news follows a series of scams in October that saw Islanders lose £147,000 in just a few days. One elderly couple in their 80s were conned out of everything in their NatWest account.

The States of Jersey Police have warned Islanders to watch out for the new scam, which claims to be from an “official” Telephone Preference Scheme service guarding against nuisance calls, for a small monthly fee.

In reality, the TPS service is always free, and they would never ask you for bank details or call people out of the blue – so if someone calls saying they’re from the TPS, you can safely assume it’s a scam and just hang up.

In a statement, the police in Jersey have warned people to be very careful about giving details to anyone on the phone, no matter who they say they are – they say that if you are in any doubt at all, you should just hang up straight away.

They say: “Islanders are reminded to always exercise extreme caution when providing bank or card details to individuals over the telephone and not to provide any details to cold callers regardless of how confident of persuasive they may seem; if in doubt hang up.

“Anyone who falls victim to this scam and believes they have lost money, should report it to the Police on 612612.”
