During a press conference on Friday, Deputy Chief Minister Senator Lyndon Farnham and Assistant Treasury Minister Senator Ian Gorst were questioned about why Medical Officer for Health, Dr Susan Turnbull, or Dr Ivan Muscat, who took on the role while Dr Turnbull was on sick leave, had not answered questions publicly in more than a month.

“I am not aware of- you know we have a body called the STAC [the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee, ed.], which is a body which is a cross-section of medical advice and I am not aware that that body disagrees with government policy.

“They keep it constantly under review as government ministers do,” Senator Gorst replied.

Video: Senator Gorst said he wasn’t “aware” of a split between STAC and the government.

STAC is a senior advisory committee to government, responsible for analysing policy ideas and providing strategic input.

The exact membership of STAC has never been made public and it is unclear exactly which medical professionals are part of the group.

The division denial came ahead of a press conference scheduled for 14:00 today at which Dr Turnbull is due to appear.

She returned to work at the end of last month following a period of sick leave.

While Dr Susan Turnbull was away, Consultant in Communicable Disease Control and Microbiology Dr Ivan Muscat took the lead.
