A total of 39 seizures were made during the year, figures released under a Freedom of Information Law (FOI) law revealed – most of them concerning clothes or items that could potentially be used as weapons.

Among those items were sharpener blades, paper clips, nails and a hook, pieces of glass and three sets of hair clippers. During their searches of inmates’ cells, prison officers found a snooker cue, a letter opener and a blade hidden in a lighter.

While some items might seem innocuous, they could have led to potentially serious injuries if used in assaults -10 incidents were reported in 2017, incurring a total of 44 days in the prison Care and Control Unit for the prisoners involved.

Two pornographic DVDs were found in another inmate’s cell.

A notice on the list provided as a response to the FOI request, stated: “Not all of the items listed below will necessarily be prohibited, however they may be removed from individuals if they are not entitled to have them at that point in time or if they pose any risk towards Health and Safety.”

The searches also yielded racist drawings, which were described as “Nazi related”, and drawings of male genitals – both of which were also seized over the last year.

Since 2015, the number of seizures made has dropped by 63%, falling from 106 to 39. 2017 also marked the first time in three years that no phones or drugs were found inside the walls of La Moye.
