International Development Minister Carolyn Labey is aiming to take one of three seats available in the area.
One of Jersey’s longest serving female politicians, Deputy Labey was first elected to represent her parish in 2002 and has been returned in every election since.
Within the parish, Deputy Labey has established initiatives including the Grouville Gazette, Community Support Group and the hundreds-strong female parish community network, Les Grouvelles.
As a States Member, she says she has always sought to champion the representation of women in public life, green initiatives and Jersey’s maritime community. She also took a leading role in campaigning for the rights of homeowners facing unexpected fines on their Foreshore properties – a saga revealed by Express back in 2017.
Promoting the island internationally and using Jersey’s strengths for global benefit has also been a key focus. To this end, Deputy Labey has chaired Jersey’s Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and Jersey Overseas Aid, which has in recent years used the island’s dairy, conservation and financial expertise to support those in need around the world.
In 2018, she was named Jersey’s first International Development Minister. She also holds the role of Assistant Chief Minister.
Commenting on her declaration, Carolyn said “I stand – as ever – as an independent. I don’t think political parties are currently the answer for Jersey, but I have always enjoyed working with others to get things done. If we are to solve the many problems facing us – the cost of living crisis, pandemic recovery, the darkening political climate in Europe – we need effective politicians who can work together, not just snipe at each other.”
She added “As I hope my record shows, I care about the issues which Islanders care about, and have dedicated much of my career to doing something about them. I bring a proven track record and experience of working hard for our Community at Parish, island and international levels.”
Jersey’s election is taking place in June.
