Jervis Baligat, Michael Michieli and Larry Simyunn were aboard fishing trawler L'Ecume II when it sank in 2022. All three men were later found dead.

A jury has been selected and sworn in at the trial of two men charged with manslaughter over the sinking of the L’Ecume II trawler.

Lewis Carr and Artur Sevash-Zade have pleaded not guilty to three counts of manslaughter and one count of conduct endangering ships, structures or individuals under the Shipping (Jersey) Law 2022.

They are accused of unlawfully killing skipper Michael Michieli, and crew members Larry Ladion Simyunn and Jervis Ramirez Baligat.

The charge under the Shipping (Jersey) Law is that they failed to maintain a proper look-out by sight and hearing to make a full appraisal of the risk of collision and failed to make proper use of radar or other machinery or equipment on the ship.

Their trial begins today.

The jury was sworn in in the Royal Court this morning and the court is due to hear opening speeches this afternoon.
