Despite snow warnings across parts of the UK, there is “just the slightest chance of some sleet or maybe a few snowflakes” in the Channel Islands.

Weather patterns are expected to shift towards the end of the week into what forecasters describe as an Arctic Maritime flow, bringing colder air southwards from the far north.

This change is forecast to trigger heavy snow showers across parts of the UK, with weather warnings already in place for areas of northern England and Scotland around New Year’s Day. However, the Channel Islands are unlikely to see similar conditions.

A spokesperson for the Jersey Met Office said the chances of snow locally remain very low, with cold but largely wet weather the most probable outcome.

“For us, the most likely scenario is just some cold weather with the odd rain shower, and just the slightest chance of some sleet or maybe a few snowflakes over the weekend or early next week,” they explained.

Forecasters stressed that confidence in longer-range predictions remains limited and urged islanders to treat online weather charts circulating on social media with caution.

“Although there is a small signal for snow affecting the island early next week, the output this far out can change a lot between different weather models and model runs,” the spokesperson said.

“Over the last few days we have seen a number of different scenarios for next week, and on the whole these seem to be trending away from anything more wintry, with a more consistent signal for milder conditions from mid-next week.”

Islanders are advised to keep an eye on the latest forecasts as conditions develop.
