A 50-year-old man who repeatedly assaulted a woman with sex toys after she made it clear she “intensely disliked” it has been jailed for five-and-a-half years.

The Royal Court heard that the woman would be left “crying in silence” each time Miguel Adelino Dos Ramos Pombo penetrated her without her consent.

Pombo denied the charge but was found guilty on 7 February following a five-day trial.

Crown Advocate Emma Hollywood, prosecuting, said the woman made it clear to Pombo that she did not want him to use them.

“There was no room for ambiguity,” Advocate Hollywood said.

She added: “She was left there crying in silence. She had few friends in Jersey to confide in.”

The woman eventually reported the offences to police at the end of 2023, and Pombo was arrested the following month.

He entered not guilty pleas when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court in July and the case was sent to the Royal Court.

Advocate Hollywood said Pombo said various reports had shown Pombo was at moderate risk of re-offending and added: “There is a clear lack of remorse. The defendant has continued to victim-blame.”

She recommended a seven-year jail sentence.

Advocate Greg Herold-Howes, defending, argued for a sentence of around four years.

He pointed out that previous sexual assault cases which had resulted in lengthier jail sentences were for attacks that had been much more serious or physically harmful.

He said: “It is clear the gravity of the offending, and the impact on the victim.

“But the other cases, it is important to note, were markedly different.

“There was no weapon or threats of death here. No physical injuries were reported.

“It was utterly wrongful, but fundamentally different from a street rape.”

Commissioner Patricia Lees said the Jurats had agreed by a majority to a sentence of five-and-a-half years.

She told Pombo: “You assaulted her in a way she made absolutely clear to you she intensely disliked. You have shown not one shred of remorse.”

Pombo was also given an indefinite restraining order and put on the sex offenders’ register for six years.

Jurats Dulake, Averty, Le Cornu, Entwistle and Gardner were sitting.

After the sentencing Detective Constable Carla Garnier said: “The States of Jersey Police would like to commend the victim in coming forward and having the strength and courage to provide live evidence during the trial.

“We would like to thank victim support services, who have been supporting and continue to support the victim.”
