Organisers are creating a new award for the fastest Jersey runner, in both the male and the female competitions, and naming it the Mitch Couriard Award in honour of a stalwart of Jersey’s honorary service.

The new award will be presented for the first time following the marathon this weekend, and then repeated in future events.

Mitch Couriard was a member of the Honorary Police, the President of the Honorary Police Association and a member of the organising team of the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon. The organisers say he was “…a true credit to the event, helping to bring the marathon back to the island and was instrumental in designing the marathon course that we have today.”

Andrew Thomas, Race Director, commented: “Every year that Mitch was involved, he used to joke that he was technically the race winner as he was always the first person back ahead of all the runners, due to driving the lead vehicle. The Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon is proud to keep Mitch at heart and create a lasting legacy for an event that he played such a crucial role in.”

Mitch died on the 23 October 2015 at the age of 61.
