Islanders who have got themselves in debt after spending too much at Christmas have been turning to Community Savings Ltd for free money advice and to help bail them out when they can’t get a bank loan.
The charity’s Executive Chariman Brian Curtis said: “Having debts is not only worrying but also draining on your budget. Think of paying interest on a debt as like throwing money away.
“If you have racked up some debts over Christmas it really is important to accept that you need to budget to pay them off as soon as possible.”
The charity set up back in 2002 offers free budget planning and gives small loans and emergency funding to those struggling with debt.
Mr Curtis said: “We recognise that managing one’s money can be difficult. Like anything, not everyone is good at it and when money is tight it gets even more difficult. So at Community Savings we try to offer our support and help to those who need it without being judgmental. Once you start to pay off your debts it will also give you a great sense of achievement.”
The charity’s office in Seale Street, behind the Town Hall, is open from 9.30 am until 12.30 pm Tuesday to Friday and you can get more information about the charity here.
