The Buldak range of spicy ramen, manufactured by Samyang Foods, is flying off the shelves at Eastern Delights, located opposite Minden Place car park.

Store workers Annie and Kesanee said that these “fire noodles” are among their best-selling items – particularly with younger customers eager to take on the “chilli challenge” that has gone viral on social media.

“Kids come in specifically to buy these noodles for the chilli challenge,” Annie explained.

The Buldak product line includes three varieties of instant noodles – ranging from “hot” to “2x spicy” and “3x spicy” – each featuring an angry chicken mascot with flames in its beak on the packaging.

In June, Denmark’s food agency recalled these noodles, warning that their high levels of capsaicin – the compound responsible for chilli peppers’ heat – could potentially cause “acute poisoning”, especially in children.

However, according to the BBC, Samyang Foods maintains there are no quality issues with their product.

These noodles are also sold at Jersey’s first 24/7 vending machine store where they have proved a hit with late-night snackers.

One local spice enthusiast spoke about how, despite leaving them in a sweat and with a runny nose, the fiery noodles saved them from both hunger and a hangover after a night out in town.

“I was hungry after going clubbing so I picked up some ramen from the Vend Store,” they said.

“The noodles were so spicy that I ended up drinking about a litre of water, which immediately cured me from developing a hangover the next day. A win-win!”
