Charlotte Medcalf, a Healthcare Assistant in the Emergency Department and Nathan Judge, a Paramedic, were due to get married on 30 May

The couple first got together five years ago when Charlotte invited Nathan to her leaving-do, as she moved to the A&E department.

“He thought I was asking him on a date,” Charlotte joked.

While this first “date” was not romantic, the pair carried on talking and eventually became a couple.

Two years ago, on 20 June, Nathan got down on one knee and proposed to Charlotte while they were in Las Vegas.

After almost two years of planning, the couple was looking forward to finally getting hitched but their plans were side-tracked by the global pandemic.

With lockdown restrictions easing throughout the island in recent weeks, they hoped they would be able to honour their original date but when one of their suppliers pulled out, they made the difficult decision to postpone their big day.

Luckily, they have been able to secure all suppliers for 30 May 2021, which means their guests won’t have any difficulties remembering the new date.

“I was a bit disappointed,” Charlotte admitted. “But everyone else is in the same boat so we can’t be mad.”

“It’s another year of saving!” Nathan added cheerfully.

Both Charlotte and Nathan ended up working on what should have been their wedding day. They still decided to mark the day in their own special way, exchanging cards and gifts before setting off to work.

But unbeknownst to Charlotte, Nathan had prepared something even bigger. He contacted the florist they had picked for the wedding and asked them to recreate Charlotte’s bouquet as well as a boutonniere he wore all day at work. “The patients loved it,” he said.

Nathan also contacted the wedding caterer, Jersey Kitchen, asking them to deliver what would have been their starter and dessert for the couple to enjoy after work.

He took a break during his day at work to go home and set out a nice table cloth and champagne to complete the surprise.

He then put on his wedding jacket and went to pick up Charlotte at work.

Although she admits she does not like the attention being on her, Charlotte was pleased with Nathan’s gesture.

“It was lovely,” she said. “I was taken aback by all the surprises! I don’t like surprises, I like to know everything!

“It was really nice and I was really surprised.”

Charlotte’s colleagues had also surprised her with pictures of her and Nathan while his colleagues had put balloons in his locker.

Sandpiper also sent out a hamper with teas, coffees, candles and Marks & Spencer’s Connie and Colin caterpillar cakes which would have been their wedding cake.

“We never had so many flower in the house,” Nathan said. “It was really romantic, we had quite a nice day.

“It’s such a shame we couldn’t celebrate with family and friends.”

While they should have been in Sri Lanka for their honeymoon, which they have also had to rebook, the couple has been enjoying a few days off.

Both kept working during lockdown, but they say they enjoyed having a few more days off together.

Reflecting on the period, Nathan said: “It’s nice that everybody seemed to come together. The togetherness at the applause every Thursday was great.”
