They said they would be focusing on policing the issue in the coming days, following “concerns” raised directly with officers and the Parish of St. Helier.
Posting on Facebook this week, Police described cycling in pedestrian areas as a “persistent issue that potentially puts pedestrians in danger”.
“Over the coming days officers will be focusing on this problem. Please respect the rules and WALK YOUR WHEELS,” they added.
PC Ben Casson, the officer organising the initiative, told Express: “Cycling on pavements and the town precinct is a subject that is regularly raised with the Town Policing Unit when they are engaging with the public in St. Helier, and especially local shopkeepers.”
He continued: “We believe that the Parish of St. Helier also receive regular complaints about this. Our primary concerns are public safety, given that these cyclists are trying to share limited space with pedestrians at peak times, such as the after-school period.
“Whilst some cyclists show no consideration to those walking, many are travelling at speed, not concentrating on their surroundings and generally riding in a manner that puts themselves and others at risk, especially young children.”
