Equality campaign group Liberate says it choose to recognise Daphne Minihane for the work she did with the Jersey Aids Relief Group in the late 1980s, and her long-standing service to Age Concern. It says as a result of her tireless efforts the Channel Islands are a much more inclusive place to work and live.

The Liberate Special Award – for an individual or organisation that has undertaken an extraordinary project, activity or initiative in the last 12 months that has supported or advanced equality and diversity in the Channel Islands – went to the Social Security Department for its on-going work to implement sections of the Discrimination (Jersey) Law 2013.

There were five other awards.

The award for the Best Small to Medium Employer (up to 80 employees – as nominated by their employee(s)) – Law at Work (Channel Islands) Limited.

The award for the Best Medium to Large Employer (more than 80 employees – as nominated by their employee(s)) – RBC Wealth Management International.

The award for the Best Service Provider – as nominated by themselves or the general public – Dandy.

The award for the Best Educational Initiative – as nominated by themselves or the general public – Lloyds Bank.

The award for the Best Not-for-Profit Support Initiative – as nominated by themselves or the general public – Barnardo’s Guernsey

Commenting on the event Vic Tanner Davy, Treasurer of Liberate, said: “following the introduction of anti-discrimination legislation two years ago in Jersey and ten years ago in Guernsey, we felt that it was time we honoured those organisations that are doing equality and diversity right.”
