The fundraising is part of a nationwide cycle challenge for the British Lung Foundation called ‘Pump Up Your Lungs’, which asks people to cycle either 140 or 300 miles.

Statistics show one in five people in the UK suffer from lung conditions and every 10 seconds a person in the UK suffers a potentially life-threatening asthma attack.

The hospital staff team includes: Elisabete Da Silva, Duarte Vieira, Karen Hughes, Kim Jenkins, Jodie Turquet, Hannah Roberts, Laurent Castagne and Petra Schinle. On each of their fundraising pages (click their names to visit), they state: “Someone dies from lung disease every five minutes. I want to put an end to that statistic.”

At the time of writing, the group’s combined fundraising total stands at more than £1,700. This can allow more than 70 nurses to support someone on the British Lung Foundation helpline.

On the team’s donation pages, it states that: “£14 Could fund an hour of vital research, giving hope to those who struggle to breathe.

“£22 could allow one of our respiratory nurses to support someone on our helpline, offering potentially lifesaving advice.

“£60 could pay for five school air pollution monitors, collecting vital air quality data that can bring about change.

“£100 could fund a day of vital research, helping to improve the care and treatment of people with lung disease.”

Together, at the time of writing, the team has also far cycled around 650 miles, which is over the equivalent to cycling from London to Paris twice.

Respiratory Nurse Specialist, Duarte Viera, said: “This is a charity that is very important to us in the Respiratory Team, and I’d like to encourage everyone to join us in raising money for a worthwhile cause.”

Health Minister Deputy Richard Renouf praised the staff for their efforts.

He said: “I am very proud of the staff we have within our health services and I fully support this initiative. The British Lung Foundation provides vital, lifesaving research and help to people all over the British Isles and gives hope to those who suffer from lung conditions.”
