25-year-old Izaak Turner, who suffered a brain injury at the age of seven which left him in a coma and unable to talk, has always had a passion for the Star Wars films.

Now his own experiences have inspired him to establish a club that gives likeminded fans the chance to share their enthusiasm, regardless of any disability they might have.

Izaak explained: “I find Jersey is welcoming for people with disabilities but sometimes disabled needs aren’t really well considered – people often think of it as being in a wheelchair but it’s much more than that.

“I tried for years to find a club I could join and it was tricky, so I though I will just make my own. I love Star Wars and I know other people do – let’s get together and share our knowledge and passion. Creating the club is my way of sharing that passion with others who may face challenges like I do,” he said.

The club’s first meeting takes place on 7 September from 18:00 to 20:30 at the Digital Jersey Academy – a venue which Izaak describes as “amazing”, offering changing areas for those who want to dress up in costume and access to technology that can help bring to life the Star Wars universe.

“We are also going to be interviewing people for a future podcast – it’s all very exciting,” he added.

Among those helping with the event is fellow fan Neal who works at merchandise store Chaos and has donated a themed Star Wars gift to be given away at the inaugural event.

“When Izaak popped in to Chaos and explained what he was trying to do, I was both impressed – it takes a lot to put yourself out there – and keen to show my support for an event that embraces diversity and shares a love for the Star Wars universe,” he said.

Rory Steel, head of the Digital Jersey Academy, said they were proud to host the event to demonstrate that disability does not mean inability.

“We look forward to creative and innovative skills being learnt by all. Activities will range from taking and editing photos of elaborate costumes, to planning, cutting and publishing video podcasts explaining the deep lore surrounding this iconic subject,” he said.

Future plans for the club include screenings of the Star Wars films, virtual question and answers professionals involved in the series and group trips.
