If you’re sitting comfortably, it appears that last year, DVS spent £562.25 on tea, coffee and biscuits. The Law Officers were next up with biscuit and beverage costs of £815.81.

But these were topped by the Police who chomped and sipped their way through £1,206.70.

The actual totals are likely to be much higher, as they didn’t include the cost of milk.

However, a previous FOI showed that the States’ 2016 milk delivery contract alone was worth nearly £50,000.

According to the FOI, civil servants and manual workers are entitled to enjoy their beverages and biscuits on paid tea breaks of 10 minutes, as well as a paid meal break of 30 minutes.

While the right to tea breaks was laid clear, when asked whether the civil service are afforded a half-day of Christmas shopping, the request responded:

“There is no policy in place to permit the civil service pay group to have a half day for Christmas shopping.

“An early work finish on Christmas Eve may be granted at the discretion of local management but this will be in line with service needs. There is no right for civil servants to this concession. “
