Gus Fraser completed the TCS London Marathon on Sunday in six hours – despite facing a back injury and carrying 10kg of equipment – while putting smiles on the faces of many other participants.

He said that aimed to motivate other runners to “keep on going” while also raising money for Cancer Research UK in memory of his father who passed away from the disease a decade ago.

Despite being the first to attempt this feat, Mr Fraser did not qualify for the Guinness World Records.

This is because he did not complete the 26-mile race in under five hours as required by the record-breaking authority.

He said: “I’d have to stop every 5km to rest the decks on the railings to have a rest, which slowed down my time quite a bit.

“But I am so pleased that I managed to complete it.”

Mr Fraser has raised £12,000 for Cancer Research UK, a cause he has been supporting for the past ten years by taking part in various physical endurance events and fundraisers.

The idea to run a marathon whilst DJing was inspired by a desire to do “something different” to raise money for the charity’s clinical trials unit in Southampton.

“A regular marathon wouldn’t be enough,” said Mr Fraser.

Having also witnessed loved ones battling the disease since his father’s death, he said he felt the need to “do something about it”.

Mr Fraser explained: “More recently, cancer struck close to home again, affecting one of my young son’s best friends, who has bravely been battling non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma for over a year.

“Another young friend was recently lucky to survive an 11-hour surgery, resulting in the removal of her pelvic tumour, colon, part of her liver, her spleen, and a total hysterectomy and ileostomy.”
