The victims of an 84-year-old man who sexually assaulted them have been praised for their role in sending him to prison for nine years.
On Friday, the Royal Court sentenced former army officer Michael Campbell to jail for serious sexual assaults against two children.
At the conclusion of the case – which had involved a trial in July, when the jury had unanimously returned a guilty verdict – Detective Constable Carla Garnier said: “This case was brought to light thanks to the vigilance of school staff and was referred through the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub, ensuring a coordinated response from the outset.
“We commend the courage and strength of the victims in coming forward to report the abuse, which we know was not easy for them.
“Support is provided before, during and after any police investigation or court hearing. It is also available when police are not involved”
DC Garnier added that the victims had been supported throughout by partner agencies, and a dedicated witness care officer had been assigned to ensure the victims and their family were kept informed and supported at every stage.
She added: “This case marks the second time in Jersey that a pre-recorded cross-examination has been used in court – a significant step forward in reducing the trauma of live testimony for vulnerable witnesses. This approach allows victims to give their evidence and be cross-examined on video before the trial begins.
“The States of Jersey Police works closely with Jersey Domestic Abuse Support, Jersey Action Against Rape, and Dewberry House as part of a trauma-informed, victim-centred approach – particularly in cases involving sexual abuse or domestic violence.
“This collaboration ensures that victims receive the care, protection, and dignity they deserve throughout the justice process.”
Campbell sexually assaulted one child multiple times in the early 1980s and the second child between 2021 and 2023.
The Court heard that the two periods of offending – separated by nearly 40 years – had had a deep psychological impact on both victims.
