Both were wrongly dumped in the plant’s Bulky Waste area.
During the first incident, the fire extinguisher became lodged in the roof, which led to the closure of the facility for a day.
“We had two canisters that were full of gas explode when we were processing them,” Manager Ian Williams recalled.
“One cylinder flew through the building and landed near to where someone was working. Both these incidents could have caused serious injury to either a member of staff or a visiting customer.”
Islanders are reminded to check what they are throwing away after two potentially dangerous incidents caused explosions at the Energy Recovery Facility (ERF).
You can always ask a member of the ERF staff for assistance, when disposing items.

Islanders are now being reminded to check what they are throwing away.
“The Energy Recovery Facility only processes burnable items – this does not include metal, glass, plasterboard, builder’s rubble or marine distress flares,” Mr Williams explained.
“We have health and safety measures in place, but it is really important that everyone realises that carelessly throwing something away could risk people’s safety. If everyone considers what they are throwing out, whether it is into a skip, a house clearance or even the household bin, the chances of a serious accident could be avoided.
“All Islanders have access to the Household Recycling and Reuse Centre at La Collette where trained staff can help with the correct disposal of various items.”
