A once-dull outdoor space at Jersey Cheshire Home is about to blossom – but the charity needs one “final push” from the public to help make it happen.

Work began this week on transforming the outdoor area of the St Helier facility, which is the island’s only residential home for adults with disabilities. The 12-week project, due to finish by the end of August, will create a safe, comfortable and fully accessible space for residents and their families to enjoy all year round.

While much of the funding was raised through the 2024 Summer Ball and previous fundraising treks, the charity is now seeking to raise a final £7,500 to cover the cost of high-quality, durable garden furniture.

“Over the past three years, we’ve been passionately fundraising to transform and double the size of our outdoor space for the benefit of our residents and their loved ones,” said Jersey Cheshire Home CEO Donna Abel.

“This new space will create a safe, accessible, and enriching environment where adults with disabilities can enjoy the outdoors with dignity and comfort. We’re almost there, but we need one final push. Your support can help us raise the remaining funds needed to be put towards furniture and equipment that will truly bring this space to life.”

The redevelopment will include three shaded seating areas with sofas, chairs and parasols, as well as a pergola with heating and lighting for year-round use. Accessible planters and garden storage will also be added to encourage residents who are able to take part in gardening and outdoor hobbies.
