A herd of Jersey cows had to be rescued from the sea in Grouville this morning after strong winds carried some of them around 300 metres offshore.

Jersey Fire and Rescue Service, alongside the RNLI’s St Catherine’s inshore lifeboat crew, worked together to bring 14 cows back to shore after they entered the water near Le Hurel Slip.

While 13 were successfully rescued, the fire service confirmed that one “sadly did not survive”.

According to the fire service, the cows had been walking along the beach when their safe exit was cut off by the high tide.

As the animals tried to find a way back, some were blown further out to sea by the wind.

Firefighters and RNLI crews used ropes to secure the cows and towed them to safety.

Passers-by and rescuers were seen using blankets and towels to warm one of the animals after it was brought back to shore.

The farmer and a Grouville Centenier were present at the scene.

The rescue began around 06:40 on Thursday 30 January when firefighters were called to Grouville Bay.
