This year’s ball is just one part of a much larger story – a story of a group of ordinary people making an extraordinary difference, as Express found out…
A long history of help
Jersey Round Table has been a cornerstone of the island’s charitable efforts since its inception in 1948. Founded by a small group of close friends and led by Brian Le Marquand, who later took on the role of national president within the Round Table Britain and Ireland (RTBI), the Jersey branch has grown and evolved, becoming a vibrant and active part of the island’s community.
Jersey Round Table is more than just a charitable organisation; it is a group of individuals who share a common goal: to make a meaningful difference in the community while forming lasting friendships. Open to men aged 18 to 45, Jersey Round Table provides a platform for individuals from diverse professional backgrounds—including IT professionals, graphic designers, farmers, entrepreneurs and lawyers—to unite in their commitment to service.
“Our members come from all walks of life,” says Christian Spurr, the current Chair of Jersey Round Table, who has been part of the organisation for over a decade.
“We’ve had some memorable members over the years, including our current Bailiff, a past Chief Minister and many more. But no matter our backgrounds, we’re all here with the same goal: to give back to our community and support one another.”
From Valley walks… to visits from Santa

Jersey Round Table’s contributions to the local community are as diverse as its membership. Over the years, the organisation has taken on a variety of projects, each designed to enhance the quality of life on the island.
One of the standout initiatives is the Governor’s Walk at La Gigoulande Mill in St Peter’s Valley. This project involved Jersey Round Table volunteering time to improve the scenic stretch of pathway that winds from the end of St Peter’s Valley up towards St Mary’s pub and inn. Known as La Gigoulande Mill, this picturesque walk is now more accessible to the public thanks to the steps and walkways installed by the Round Table.
“We wanted to create something lasting, something that the community could enjoy for years to come,” Christian explains. “By improving the Governor’s Walk, we’ve not only enhanced a beautiful part of our island but also encouraged people to get out and enjoy Jersey’s natural beauty.”
However, the most well-known of Jersey Round Table traditions is the annual Santa visit. Every year, Santa Claus arrives in Jersey, with the full support of the Round Table, to bring holiday cheer to the island’s children. Many adults will remember the bright red sleigh from their childhood and have even seen the video of Santa trying to escape the airport car-park barrier a few years back. It is a time-honoured tradition that stretches back decades and holds a special place in the hearts of many Jersey residents.
“Santa’s visit is something that really resonates with the community,” Christian says. “We go to all the parishes, and it is incredible to see the joy on the children’s faces. It is also an opportunity for us to raise funds for the Jersey Charities Appeal, which supports local causes across the island.”
In addition to these flagship projects, Jersey Round Table also organises an annual environmental day, during which members come together to tackle ecological challenges on the island. Whether it is clearing invasive species from headlands or supporting the National Trust for Jersey, these efforts demonstrate the Round Table’s commitment to preserving the island’s natural environment.
Throughout the year, Jersey Round Table also engages in various fundraising activities, from casino nights to supermarket bag packing. These efforts help generate vital funds for local charities, ensuring that the impact of Jersey Round Table’s work is felt across the community.
Glitz, glamour and generosity
While Jersey Round Table’s charitable efforts are visible throughout the year, the highlight of its fundraising calendar is undoubtedly Jersey Round Table Charity Ball. Set to take place on the Saturday 30 of November, this year’s event promises to be an unforgettable evening of entertainment, camaraderie, and generosity.

“The Charity Ball is a black-tie dinner event like no other in Jersey,” the Chairman notes with pride. “We are hosting it at the RJA and HS, and we’re expecting between 400 and 500 guests. It is a night where the community comes together to celebrate, have fun, and most importantly, raise money for local charities.”
Sponsored by warm.je, a local company that has generously supported the event for several years now, the Charity Ball is a testament to the spirit of collaboration that defines Jersey Round Table. The evening will kick off with a drink’s reception, followed by a superb three-course dinner by Simon Harper.
But what really sets Jersey Round Table Charity Ball apart is the annual show—a unique blend of creativity, humour, and local flair. Each year, the members of the Round Table put their heads together to create a performance that leaves attendees in stitches. Past themes have included Top Gun, Shrek, The Wizard of Oz, and even a Jersey version of the Eurovision competition.
“The show is something we all look forward to,” the Chair explains. “It’s not quite cabaret, but it’s a performance that we write ourselves, with a theme that everyone can relate to. We then put our own Jersey twist on it and bring it to life on stage. It’s a lot of fun and a great way to engage the audience.”
Following the show, guests will dance the night away to the tunes of local band Inside Job, rounding off an evening that is as much about celebration as it is about charity.
Making a difference
Jersey Round Table Charity Ball is more than just a night of entertainment – it is a crucial fundraising event that supports a wide range of local charities. This year, the funds raised will be distributed among smaller charities on the island, where even a modest donation can have a significant impact.
“We’re really focused on supporting local charities that might not have the same visibility as some of the larger organisations,” the Chairman explains. “The money we raise at the Charity Ball will go directly to these causes, helping them continue their important work in the community.”
In the lead-up to the event, Jersey Round Table is calling on local businesses and individuals to contribute to the raffle, which is a key component of the evening’s fundraising efforts. Whether it is vouchers, gifts, or other prizes, all donations are welcome and appreciated.
“It’s all about coming together as a community,” the Chairman says. “Every contribution, no matter how small, helps us make a bigger difference.”
“So much more than just charity work”
While the Charity Ball is a major highlight of Jersey Round Table’s calendar, it is far from the only activity that defines this vibrant organisation.
For its members, the Round Table offers a unique blend of personal growth, social engagement, and community service.
“Being a part of the Round Table is about so much more than just charity work,” the Chairman reflects.
“It’s about forming lifelong friendships, developing new skills, and finding a sense of purpose in giving back to the community.”

Members of Jersey Round Table meet every other Tuesday, engaging in a wide range of activities that foster camaraderie and teamwork. From games of pétanque to environmental clean-ups, these gatherings are an opportunity for members to bond over shared experiences while making a positive impact on the island.
Reaching beyond island shores…
But Jersey Round Table’s reach extends beyond the shores of Jersey.
Each year, members travel off-island to meet with other Round Table clubs at events such as the National Sporting Weekend, where they participate in various sports and connect with other Tablers from across Britain and Ireland. These trips, which this year also include visits to Switzerland, France, and Sark, are a testament to the organisation ’s emphasis on fellowship and adventure.
“It’s important for us to support each other, not just within our own group, but as part of the larger Round Table community,” the Chairman explains. “These trips allow us to learn from others, share ideas, and bring those insights back to Jersey.”
Why islanders should “do more” – and join
For those who might be considering joining Jersey Round Table, the Chairman has a simple message: “Do more.”
“Jersey Round Table is a great opportunity to meet new people, develop lifelong friendships, and make a real difference in the community,” he says. “We’re a diverse group, and there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re interested in hands-on charity work, social activities, or just want to be part of a supportive community, Round Table offers a unique opportunity.”
The Round Table’s tagline – “Do more” – captures the spirit of the organisation. It is a call to action for anyone who wants to get involved, make a positive impact, and have fun in the process.
“We’re all about doing more—more for our community, more for our friends, and more for ourselves,” the Chairman concludes. “If that sounds like something you’re interested in, we’d love to have you join us.”
