Jersey’s first limb difference support group has been launched following the inspiring story of a young islander who recently became a quadruple amputee.

Jersey Limb Difference Support Group – which is made of local amputees and islanders with genetic limb differences – met for the first time last month.

The group aims to show that life after limb loss is full of purpose and community.

The group’s formation was inspired by the story of former JCG student Lily McGarry.

Earlier this year, the 23-year-old was rushed to hospital suffering from meningococcal septicaemia – an aggressive infection.

The Cardiff University medical student survived two cardiac arrests, but the infection caused severe blood flow issues and parts of all four of her limbs were amputated.

Last month, an online fundraising page was set up to assist Lily with the purchase of advanced prosthetics and ongoing care.

It since raised over £350,000 for her.

The Jersey Limb Difference Support Group have organised ‘The Walk of Support for Lily’, which will take place across St Aubin’s Bay on Monday 26 May.

Group founder Greg Murray said the event aims to show Lily that “she is not alone”.

“There is life after limb loss, and there’s a community here that stands with her as she navigates this journey,” he said.

The event is open to everyone – including those using disability scooters, prosthetics, wheelchairs and walking aids.

It is not a fundraising walk, but aims to be “a symbol of support, resilience, and hope for Lily”, the group said.

A photo will be sent to Lily on the day of the walk, along with messages of encouragement from group members.
