Tom Wilson, Consultant at SRJ Technologies

Introduce yourself: Tom Wilson, age 25. Jersey born. I enjoy cooking and playing rugby for Jersey Reds Athletic.

Current role: Consultant at SRJ Technologies in Jersey. SRJ focus on innovative asset integrity solutions and containment management for high pressure situations, particularly oil and gas. This includes weld-free couplings and pipe repair clamps which create operational efficiencies.

Education: I attended school in Jersey and then the UK where I studied for a Master’s Degree in Manufacturing Engineering at Cambridge University.

Why did you decide to come back to Jersey to work? To be honest, it wasn’t the plan. I didn’t think there was much in the way of manufacturing and engineering here. I was in London as an intern with JMAN Group, but after May they were unable to keep me on because of Covid. I returned home to Jersey and that’s when I heard about the opportunity with SRJ. It has been great to be able to come back and use my skills. I’m very grateful to Alex Wood, CEO of SRJ and the rest of the team.

What does your role involve?

I work in the Head Office in St Helier, supporting the engineering team and Technical Director Paul Eastwood. We manage the design, manufacturing and implementation of our products and services, which are physically produced and installed local to clients, around the globe. I use a range of software from SolidWorks to the Microsoft Power Platform that allow me to model and prove concepts for new product innovation and build out data architecture to meet client needs.

I am working on a few research projects around product and service innovation, looking at how to make the most out of new technology and create value for our clients. This includes taking advantage of new materials, such as composites and synthetics, which can do the same job as steel but are cheaper and lighter. I’m also developing an app and data system which will enable clients to capture and visualise essential operational data, creating valuable insights and allowing data driven improvements to their asset integrity strategy to be made.

What are you hoping to achieve in your role? It is still quite an old-fashioned industry so we want to find new ways of doing things and do them much better. The weld-free couplings are one example and we are now looking at data and data visualisation to monitor the status of pipes and prevent leaks. This will deliver value for the client and is better for the environment.

I am thoroughly enjoying my role and because of the kind of business we are in, I’m hoping that in the future there will be plenty of opportunities to travel with SRJ too.

What message do you have for other graduates and young people? Look around carefully, there are potentially a lot more opportunities in Jersey than you realise. It isn’t just financial services. I’m lucky, the team at SRJ are friendly and the culture is innovative and relaxed. The business began as a start-up here and has recently listed on the Australian stock exchange. It proves the potential for starting something cutting-edge in Jersey which can be developed into a global business.
