Bohohitch handmade macrame has become an unintentional success story born from a single ball of cotton. Chantal Le Goff, the creator of Bohohitch discovered her love and talent for creating modern macramé designs during lockdown. ‘One evening I’d had enough of watching endless tv, and remembered I had bought some cotton months ago but hadn’t gotten round to giving it a go. After spending the evening hitting pause and rewind on a tutorial I discovered my passion for creating macrame and from there I decided to start my own business and created Bohohitch.’
‘I’ve always enjoyed teaching myself how to create different forms of art as a hobby. I also have a real love for photography which started as a child when my Dad taught my sister and I how to develop photos in our makeshift lab in the garage from old school camera film’
‘Since I can remember I have always quietly had an ambition to start up my own business, but until now I had never found my true passion and struggled with my confidence to take the leap and put myself out there. Like most of us, life happens, spare time is a luxury and by the time the weekend comes around you’re usually zapped from your working week. But macrame really struck a chord with me. The first piece I made was far from perfect but it made me feel happy when I looked at it. Since that evening I have spent the last six months endlessly researching techniques and teaching myself how to develop and make my own designs. I created the name Bohohitch as I thought it summed up what I do perfectly. The style of my creations are boho chic, and hitch is the name of a type of knot I use to create something beautiful.
‘The quality of my pieces is just as important to me as is being sustainable and I was determined to use materials which are the best quality and also have a low environmental impact. So I have spent a lot of time researching materials and suppliers and have struck on a brand of cotton which is both absolutely beautiful and is also made from 100% recycled cotton using textiles sourced from around the world which was headed for landfill. The cotton is also certified OEKO-Tex Standard 100, which means it is free from harmful substances like allergenic dyes, chlorophenols and pesticides. Even the cotton production waste is offset through donating to support zero-waste initiatives. I source the drift wood both locally and also through a couple who collect it while beach cleaning in the South of the UK.’
‘I work fulltime in the financial sector, so my typical week is now spent working all day in the corporate world and then working late into the night and weekends in the creative world. Many of my design take hours upon hours to make, so my dog Indie is a good reminder to get out in the fresh air and take a break!’
‘I have so many plans for Bohohitch’s future, from creating a number of different interior design ranges, growing my bespoke design service and also venturing into hiring pieces to help my clients create their picture perfect boho and rustic weddings, events and photo shoots. But the one thing which continues to strike me since starting this journey are the number of incredibly kind, supportive and talented people I have been lucky enough to meet and who I can equally help to support them wherever I can. I’ll never tire of that feeling I get when I deliver a piece and I can see my customer is so pleased with it, and I think to myself I did that, I made that little bit of happy happen.’
