Rae is a local artist who focuses mainly on Jersey’s local woodlands. Working with a mix of materials from resin to lino cutting, Rae likes to try to ‘bring the outside in’ with her work.

I have worked for years in the creative industry, creating work for other artists. After making a decision to move home to Jersey to be closer to my family, I found myself walking through St Catherine’s woods and I saw some mushrooms growing out of a stump and I thought it was really beautiful. I decided later that day that I was going to re-create this in resin. With my years of experience in moulding and casting, I was able to create my first body of work as an artist called ‘Dans Le Bouaîs’sie’ meaning ‘Into the Woods’ in Jerrais which was a small tribute to my native heritage.

I have always found myself drawn to the woodlands and the walking routes along the coast line. Jersey is such a beautiful Island, I wanted to pay tribute to the little things in nature that contribute to the Island's beauty.

This piece is part of the collection entitled ‘Dans Le Bouaîs’sie’ which means ‘Into the woods’ in Jerrais.

Dimensions 19cm x 18.56cm

Hand-painted mushrooms made from resin and places on locally sourced wood.

Since my first body of work, I worked my mushrooms with driftwood found washed up on the beaches during my walks in the first lockdown in early 2020. I really loved the collaboration of the sea and the woodlands.

Line Abstract Mushroom Collage Art

I created a series of acrylic line paintings and collages during the early 2020 lockdown as I had limited resources at the time. I experimented with shapes, size and colours but always stayed true to the focus of mushrooms that come in all shapes and sizes.

Mushroom Lino Prints

I have expanded my practice with working with Lino cutting. Using Linoleum blocks, I am able to carve my own designs and print them by hand. I love the freedom of designing it gives me but also the challenge of working with this material. Every cut you make is final in the design so you have to be careful to not make a mistake. There is a thrill in not knowing how it will look until you print it and there is nothing like the feeling when you see it has gone exactly how you wanted it to.
