The Guernsey Island Games Association has put out a reminder to only follow their legitimate social media accounts, after a spate of “clone accounts” have started attempting to contact residents.
At the last iteration of the games, which were held in Guernsey in 2023, organisers had to repeatedly warn people off signing up for fake live streams, which targeted the wallets of those looking to get a view of the action.
However, the official response said the fake profiles do not “breach its community standards”, despite the accounts being obvious fakes, which were attempting to steal the cash of Island Games fans across the globe.
With the games returning this year, with Orkney hosting, it was only a matter of time before the social media fake accounts returned, especially with the apparent inaction from Facebook’s side to combat the scams.
In a post online, the official Guernsey Island Games Association (GIGA) page says it can’t send friend requests, so if one is received, it’s from a fake account.
The 2025 Island Games kick off in 39 days. They take place from 12 to 18 July.
