A corporate cycling series is the latest initiative announced by the Guernsey Velo Club as it aims to get more people riding.

The four race series will be held in the traffic-free confines of either Delancey Park or The Track over races that will be around 20 minutes long.

Teams of three will score points for their company.

It is a first for the Velo Club.

“The idea is to have a bit of fun, a bit of corporate competition. Have a beer afterwards, fill the stands at The Track with work colleagues cheering you on, and hopefully it will be that little door that will open for people,” said the club’s road development officer Mark Smith.

Each team can have one club member and consist of five people in all, three racing on the day.

Dates are yet to be confirmed but will be confirmed on gvc.gg.

“We’ll do a training session as well so people get familiar with the track and how to race on it. We’re encouraging mixed teams as well.”

Paul de Garis, head of coaching, hopes the initiative will get people involved that are already riding socially.

“We’ve got a lot of cyclists on the island. If you go down the West Coast on a Sunday morning, it is busy, but that never really transfers into our races.

“I always go back to having fun, going in the office the next morning, talking about it, it’s just like talking about the football results. That’s what we want.”
