17 people took part in Alderney’s first ‘not-parkrun’ on Saturday.
13 adults and four juniors tackled the 5km course along Braye Common organised by Alderney Athletics.
They had described it as “a fun, free, timed 5K run – not quite a Park Run… but kinda!”
A (not) parkrun is an official off-shoot of parkrun – which is a global organisation that promotes physical activity through free weekly timed events allowing people to run or walk at their own pace.
In the absence of parkrun events, entrants can submit a time for their own efforts so that their activity is still logged.
Just like official parkrun events, Alderney’s not-parkrun was on at 09:00 on Saturday morning, and was manned by volunteers with all ages and abilities welcome.
The informal run club will meet once per month going forward.
The next Alderney not-parkrun will take place on 29 March.
Alderney Athletics told Express that the first was such a success they are already expecting some ‘parkrun tourists’ to visit the island from the other Channel Islands.
“We’ve had a lot of interest off the back of our first event, and are expecting to host runners from both Jersey and Guernsey over the coming months.
“We’re currently working with a few clubs in Jersey to arrange a boat given there’s no regular route connecting the two islands! So lovely to receive all this support for our event.”
