Guernsey patients will have access to the island’s first permanent consultant rheumatologist and a new consultant dermatologist at the Medical Specialist Group.
For the first time patients will have access to a dedicated consultant rheumatologist specialising in conditions that affect the joints, muscles and immune system.
This replaces the previous arrangement of rheumatologists employed by Health & Social Care visiting the island.
Around 30 new patients a month are referred to rheumatology.
Michael Clynes, who starts on 22 September, will already known to many rheumatology patients locally, having been one of the visiting rheumatologists for the past four years.
A dermatology service is also being created at the MSG, giving patients access to expert care for skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and skin cancers.
Consultant dermatologist Dr Alice Walker will join on 8 September, taking over the service from Dr Graham Reilly who provided the service on behalf of HSC for many years.
Around 100 new patients each month are referred to dermatology.
Dr Steve Evans, chair of MSG said: “We’re very pleased to take on these services and that we have been able to attract two excellent consultants to take up permanent roles on the island.
“We are grateful to the Committee for Health and Social Care for transferring over the funding for these posts and we look forward to welcoming Dr Clynes and Dr Walker to the island next month.”
