The first fund has been launched under a new Guernsey scheme designed to promote environmental sustainability.

The Nature Capital Funds regime is designed for investments that “make a positive contribution to the natural world or significantly reduce harm to nature”, the Guernsey Financial Services Commission said.

The newly-registered Gresham House fund will invest in “large‑scale habitat creation and ecological restoration projects known as ‘habitat banks'”, a GFSC spokesperson said.

Peter Bachmann, from Gresham House, said the fund showed the company’s “commitment to supporting investment in nature at scale”.

The company was committed to creating a “nature positive economy” restoring biodiversity while generating returns for investors.

GFSC Director General William Mason said the regime was “designed as a pragmatic framework to help make it easier for investors to contribute to helping the planet”.

Any type of fund registered in Guernsey can apply for Nature Capital Funds accreditation, which shows investors that their money will help the environment as well as seeking a financial return.
