It’s one of Guernsey’s biggest employers, a daily part of island life, and now facing a pivotal moment as tax reform looms.
The Guernsey Retail Group announced this morning that it is creating a new role aimed at strengthening support for local retailers, as the sector prepares for significant change over the coming years.
The trade body is recruiting a Retail Liaison Officer and Administrator, a position designed to build closer relationships with retailers across the island while supporting the GRG board in delivering its key initiatives.
A “pivotal time”
The move comes at what the organisation described as a “pivotal time” for Guernsey’s retail industry, with the GRG currently working alongside the States of Guernsey on the development of a long-term retail strategy. That work is intended to shape the future of the sector over the next decade and ensure it meets the needs of both islanders and visitors.
The GRG said the strategic planning is particularly important in the context of potential tax reform, including the possible introduction of a consumption tax or GST, which could have wide-ranging implications for retailers.
Jonathan Creasey, Chair of the Guernsey Retail Group, said the sector’s economic and social contribution should not be underestimated.
“The retail industry employs around 3,500 people across more than 300 businesses and its value to the fabric of our society is widely recognised,” he said.
“Crucially, the direct and indirect contribution of the sector to the Guernsey economy should not be underestimated – and is particularly important given the objective of the States to grow the local economy”.
Mr Creasey said the new role would play a key part in helping the sector adapt to an evolving operating environment.
“This Retail Liaison Officer will provide essential support as we navigate through an evolving retail landscape, maintaining regular engagement with retailers of all sizes throughout the Island,” he added.
