A local advocate and a former politician have been selected to sit on a panel that decides how referendums are worded and who heads up campaigns.

Advocate Ralph Spencer-Tucker and Jennifer Bridge MBE have been recommended by the Privileges and Procedures Committee and will need to be appointed by the States Assembly before starting their roles.

Advocate Spencer-Tucker is a Senior Associate in Dispute Resolution at Ogier, where he has worked since 2019. He qualified as an Advocate in December 2023.

Ms Bridge is a part-time teacher, a Non-Executive Director of the Co-Op, and a qualified mediator. She has been a member of the Employment and Discrimination Tribunal, the Chair of the Jersey Literary Festival Association, and a living wage campaigner. She was a States Member from 1999 to 2005.

The Referendum Commission decides how the question of any referendum is worded, and designates the lead campaign groups for a referendum.

There are no referendums on the horizon currently, but questions about the future of the role of Bailiff re-emerged last year. A debate on a proposal by Deputy Ian Gorst is scheduled to take place in March.

Advocate Spencer-Tucker and Ms Bridge will be joining Advocate Mark Boothman, who chairs the Commission, and Commission members former Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur OBE and Christopher Dobbing, who was a member of World Economic Forum’s Global Shapers community until 2022.
