Octo Voces Guernsey will perform their summer concert on Friday 13 June, at 18:30 at the Town Church, St Peter Port.

The programme is structured into sections that explore different aspects of love: Discovered, Lost, Recalled, Desired, Lamented, and Restored.

It includes Hope is the Thing with Feathers by Ivo Antognini, a piece inspired by one of the most renowned texts by American poet Emily Dickinson. In this poem, hope is metaphorically represented as a small bird that lands on the soul, offering protection in difficult moments without asking for anything in return. Written in eight parts, the piece showcases Antognini’s flair for jazz harmonies and vivid word painting.

Also featured is Fading by Joanna Marsh, part of her Arabesque series. This composition sets words by Iraqi poet Abboud al Jabiri, who likens an aging woman to a bird shedding its plumage. Marsh brings this imagery to life by constantly shifting voice groupings and harmonies, ensuring that the music never feels still. The resulting soundscape is unique, occasionally discordant, and eerily beautiful, presenting a challenge for performers.

The concert also includes two works by locally born composer Steve Richer: Remember Me and Red & Gold , featuring lyrics by Lisa Murfitt. Octo Voces has been fortunate to premiere several of Richer’s compositions, including First Light , which was recently performed by the choir of Selwyn College, Cambridge.
