At Jersey College for Girls, the Sixth Form experience is about more than just academic success – it’s about developing confident, capable young women who are ready to take on the world.
Olivia Varney, who recently joined the College as Head of Sixth Form, brings a global perspective to her role, having worked in schools in Athens, Australia, and most recently at Victoria College in Jersey. Her passion for girls’ education shines through.

“Girls’ education is everything I had hoped for – it’s lively, challenging and inspiring.
“I want our students to not even question they have equal opportunities. I want them to feel brave, independent and confident, not just in their successes but also in the minor failures that lead to major achievements.
Looking ahead
JCG Sixth Form students are ambitious and driven. They leave to go to the top universities and exciting career paths. Whether they’ve grown up in Jersey or joined from other schools, each student is supported to astound themselves by what they achieve.
“The students impress me by their level of ambition, determination, drive and energy to make our society better for everyone,” Miss Varney said.
Breadth and depth
“At JCG, we are very fortunate to have a curriculum that has breadth and depth,” Miss Varney added.
Students study A Levels supported by expert teaching staff, while also engaging in a Life Skills Programme designed to inform them and empower them to question things in the real world as well as an Advanced Learning Programme to support academic excellence.

Students also enjoy a wide variety of innovative electives that build resilience and community – everything from kickboxing, the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), LAMDA performance and communication awards, crochet to forest walks with our Principal and the Couch to 5K initiative.
Leadership and character development
JCG’s Sixth Form encourages students to develop a deeper understanding of themselves as leaders.
Our unique female leadership programme ‘She Leads’ provides a range of initiatives designed to foster personal growth and awareness. The result is a vibrant, inclusive community where students support one another and grow together.
“The best decision I’ve made”
The wide range of opportunities available to students at JCG was one of the things that attracted Ava to the College. She joined in Year 12 in September from Les Quennevais to study Drama, English Literature and Media Studies. So far, she has joined the EPQprogramme and the Good Morning JCG team, which produces regular bulletins about life in the College.
She has also grown closer to people in her House, Nightingale, and joined the team taking part in the House Drama competition. She confided she is already looking forward to the musical the JCG Youth Theatre is set to perform in 2026.

“There is so much variety in the opportunities open to students here compared to other schools,” she said.
“It is so much more than my A levels, it’s about me, my character. I feel I am being prepared to thrive in life!
“I was nervous at first, but everyone is so welcoming. The teachers are incredibly supportive – Mr Howarth even learns everyone’s name, which makes it feel so personal with such a strong family feel. There’s so much variety here; it’s the best decision I’ve made for my education. It’s a really lovely place.”
Join us at our Sixth Form Options Evening on Monday 3rd November between 17:00 and 18:30 to meet our students and staff, have a tour of our campus and discover what makes JCG such a special place to learn and grow.
