A world-renowned soprano brought star power and soaring vocals to Jersey as she officially launched this year’s Liberation Music Festival.

Performing alongside pianist Sebastian Wybrew in a concert entitled ‘We’ll Gather Lilacs’, acclaimed singer Elizabeth Watts wowed sold-out crowds at St Helier Methodist Church and Government House with a vibrant mix of opera, folk, and cabaret – and described her time on the island as “fantastic” and “a joy”.

Organised by music engagement charity, Music in Action, the concert marked the official launch of its annual Liberation Music Festival, which is running until mid-May.

Thanking her crowds, the singer said: “What a fantastic time I have had performing in Jersey. Such a warm, appreciative audience at my recital, and a privilege to perform at Government House.”

As part of her visit, Ms Watts also held a masterclass with young singing talent from the Jersey Academy of Music, which was organised as part of Music in Action’s outreach programme.

Describing the session as “a joy”, Ms Watts continued: “It’s amazing to see what work Music in Action is doing in Jersey and the lives being changed as a result.

She added: “What a fabulous place Jersey is, and what an inspiration Music in Action is too.”
