Beekeeper Bernie to retire after a sweet 50 years in business

A “beloved” local beekeeper has announced his retirement after half a century of making honey.

Bernie Morel has exclusively supplied CI Coop with Morel Honey since the early 1970s from his family-run operation in St Ouen.

CI Coop CEO Mark Cox thanked the longtime beekeeper for his service and wished him the best on his “well-earned retirement”.

Mr Cox said: "Throughout his five decades with us, Bernie has been a passionate and dedicated supplier, growing alongside our Coop and adapting to the changes and challenges of the business."

“From increased regulations to the introduction of barcodes, Bernie has weathered it all, ensuring that our members and customers always have access to the finest local honey.”

Even after 50 years, Morel Honey still causes quite the ‘buzz’ among customers. With over 1,700 units produced in 2023 and similar predicted for 2024, CI Coop said the local honey “remains a highly sought-after product for its superior quality and unique local flavour”.

Reflecting on his career, Mr Morel said: “I’ve dedicated my life to producing the best honey I can for the people of Jersey, and it has been an honour to work exclusively with the Coop."

Kingsley Pallot, a fellow beekeeper who has worked with Mr Morel in recent years, will take over the responsibility of supplying the retailer, and “continue to uphold the same standards of excellence that customers have come to expect”.

Mr Morel said: “I know Kingsley will carry on the Jersey Honey tradition with the same care and dedication."
