JT open up the history of Jersey's telecoms

Friday 13 May 2016

Following the popularity of its ‘120th anniversary ‘open doors’ tours, JT is once again inviting Islanders to join us for an exciting opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of Jersey’s longest running local telecoms company.

Within two decades of Alexander Graham Bell being awarded the first U.S. patent for the invention of the telephone in 1876, Jersey’s first telephone exchange opened on the corner of Minden Place and Bath Street.

On 1st May 1895, Down’s Livery Stable of David Place proudly advertised ‘Telephone No 11’.

JT’s one hour guided tours are free to attend for members of the public and will be hosted by members of JT’s board of directors, CEO and leadership team who will offer an insight into the Company’s past, present and future in the Channel Islands.

The public tours will take place on Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 May at Telephone House in Minden Place and start at 12.15pm, 1.15pm and 4pm (1 hour in length). Pre-registration is essential to secure one of the limited spaces.

Daragh McDermott, Corporate Affairs Director at JT, said: “JT’s rich history supporting our community began with 14 ‘country exchanges’ and miles of overhead lines, 121 years later and a lot has changed in that time.

"What hasn’t is that we remain committed to our local customers and putting their needs at the heart of our business. Which is why we would like to give people the opportunity to share the JT story and to see first-hand how things have changed over the years.  We will give an exclusive behind the scenes look at how JT works and the teams who work daily to keep up with global trends and deliver our customers the technology to keep them connected.

“We’re inviting you take a look first hand at the technology which helps us deliver fibre broadband and the fastest mobile speeds across our islands and beyond.”

“The tours were very popular last year and we enjoyed having the opportunity to meet our customers and hear their experiences of JT as we bring to life the history of Jersey’s telecommunications through old photos. Members of our Young Talent Team will also be joining the tours to give demonstrations of some of the very latest leading-edge technologies of the future.”

Tickets are free, however pre-booking is essential and can be done online at eventbrite. Any customer requiring special access arrangements should email katie.lawson@jtglobal.com
