Liverpool legend Ian Rush announced as 2016 Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon Ambassador

Friday 26 August 2016

Ex-Wales international and Liverpool FC legend Ian Rush, MBE, will be joining the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon on Sunday, October 2nd as race ambassador.

Mr Rush, who played for Liverpool FC from 1980 to 1987 and again from 1988 to 1996, is the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 346 goals in all competitions during his two spells with the Reds. At international level, he made 73 appearances for the Wales national team and remains the record goalscorer for his country, with 28 goals between 1980 and 1996.

Richard Ingle, CEO of Standard Chartered in Jersey, said: “We are thrilled that Ian has agreed to be the official race ambassador for this year’s Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon, and we are all looking forward to welcoming him to the island. The marathon has grown year on year, with thousands of people taking part over the years to make it one of the most popular events in Jersey’s sporting calendar. Ian’s role as race ambassador is sure to add an extra layer of excitement and make this year’s marathon even more special for those who are running or spectating.”

Since retiring as a player in 2000, Mr Rush has held coaching and manager roles at Chester City and has worked as a television pundit for Sky Sports and ESPN. He was inducted to the English Football Hall of Fame in 2006 after a playing career that included winning five First Division titles, two European Cups, three FA Cups, five League Cups and two FA Charity Shields.

The funds raised by runners entering the marathon’s three events – the Full Marathon, Relay and 3k Fun Run – will be split equally between Seeing is Believing, Standard Chartered’s charitable initiative that aims to tackle avoidable blindness around the world, and local children’s charity, Brig-y-Don.

This year’s Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon takes place on Sunday 2nd October. Online entry is open at www.jersey-marathon.com.
