Digital Jersey, in association with local industry training provider Comtrain has launched an intensive 11-week technical networking course beginning on 28th September, that enables participants to become a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA).
As Cisco training is no longer run on-Island, the course presents a unique opportunity for industry employers to upskill their staff so they can meet the demands of positions available in the sector.
The course is part of Digital Jersey’s Skills Availability and Development work stream, to ensure that the Island has the skills to meet the current and future needs of business and the community. This feeds into Digital Jersey’s broader objective of supporting sustainable economic growth in Jersey’s digital industry.
Industry experts will lead the course and provide participants with the skills and knowledge to install, configure, manage and troubleshoot a basic IPv4 and IPv6 network, the two latest versions of the Internet Protocol (IP) used to identify devices on a network. At the end of the programme, learners will have the skills to take employment in computer networking immediately. They will also be in a position to take the Cisco CCENT and/or CCNA accreditation exams to obtain a globally recognised qualification.
The programme is being run on-Island at at the Digital Jersey Hub, taking place every Monday (all day) and Thursday evening (6pm - 8pm), with the Thursday session providing an additional advanced lab session, where learners will be able to practise their acquired skills and learn by doing with practitioner Julian Skelley. The course will run for 11 weeks between 28th September and 21st December 2015, with weeklong breaks after week 4 and week 9. The final 2 weeks will also include an extra support day.
Cisco practitioner and course leader Gordon Porter said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for local employers to equip their staff with valuable skills, and put them in a position to obtain a globally recognised qualification at the end of it. Having spent 19 years working with Cisco systems and delivering many training programmes in the Channel Islands, I’m excited to see the skills development of the individuals on this course."
Cisco practitioner and course leader Julian Skelley said: “Cisco training is a crucial aspect of the skills base required by many businesses, and being trained and/or qualified as a CCNA is a real professional advantage for individuals in a cross-section of industries. I’m passionate about local companies using technology to really drive business results, and I hope to see this happening following our course.”
Carla Harris, Director at Digital Jersey, said: “I’m delighted to announce the launch of this course as part of Digital Jersey’s skills programme, which will play a significant part in growing our own digital talent-base in Jersey. Following rapid network developments due to cloud and mobile innovations, Island-based companies in all sectors can benefit from having CCNA qualified staff. This course will help upskill the future workforce, unlocking high level employment opportunities, and provide participants with a globally recognised qualification.”
