Ogier announces new partner and increased Caribbean Dispute Resolution capability in Hong Kong

Thursday 10 March 2016

Ogier has announced the appointment of Oliver Payne to its Caribbean Dispute Resolution team based in Hong Kong.

As a commercial litigation practitioner with over six years’ experience of Cayman company disputes and insolvency and restructuring, Mr Payne has relocated from Ogier’s Cayman office to the Hong Kong team and joins as a partner, bringing the law firm’s global partnership to 50.

In addition to acting for significant financial institutions operating in London and Hong Kong, Mr Payne has been involved in insolvency matters concerning many of the large accountancy firms, including EY, PwC, KPMG, Deloitte and Grant Thornton.

He has extensive experience in international fund disputes, and acts for and against a variety of service providers, including directors, investment managers, administrators, shareholders and creditors.

Practice partner of Ogier in Hong Kong, Nick Plowman said: “Oliver’s relocation, led by sustained client demand for contentious Cayman advice delivered by senior litigators based in Hong Kong, follows Ray Ng’s highly successful relocation from BVI to Hong Kong as Head of Dispute Resolution for Asia.”

Mr Payne is noted by Legal 500 as an “experienced practitioner” and is quoted by clients as “outstanding” and providing “highly efficient service and support”.

Mr Payne, a solicitor advocate, initially joined Ogier from Herbert Smith in 2009 and knows the Asian region well, having worked in Hong Kong for extended periods in the past.

Since joining, he has been involved in many significant cases in Cayman (including the US$9.2bn Saad litigation), and has appeared as an advocate numerous times, recently representing Tianrui (International) Holding Company Limited in the much discussed China Shanshui Cement Groupmatter in the Financial Services Division of the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands.
