Over 125 children are set to take part in the annual Deutsche Bank Junior Hockey Tournament, which will take place on Saturday morning at Les Quennevais.

The tournament is split into two, the ‘A Team Trophy’ tournament and the ‘B Team Cup’ tournament. Both tournaments have seven teams and the competitions will be run on a round robin basis, with five points being awarded for a win, three for a score draw, two for a no score draw and one for a loss.

Children from Year 4 to 6 will compete and for many of them this will be their first chance to play against other schools.

ECJS Beechwood from Guernsey are returning to defend their title in the Trophy tournament as will VCP Red in the Cup tournament.  Other schools participating are St. George’s Prep, St. Michael’s Prep, JCG Prep, Beaulieu and Grouville, with each team playing six matches of eight minutes duration.

Deutsche Bank’s generous sponsorship of these tournaments means every child will receive a t-shirt and there are prizes for the most promising players and up and coming players as well as a trophy and medals for the winning teams.

Sally Le Neveu, Coordinator of the Deutsche Bank Primary Schools Hockey Festival on behalf of the Jersey Hockey Association, said: “This tournament is designed to give as many primary school pupils as possible the chance to play hockey, and everyone is looking forward to a fun morning of hockey.”

The tournament is one of a number of competitions organised as part of the Deutsche Bank Development Programme, which provides ongoing coaching for junior boys and girls throughout the season and which has introduced hundreds of children to hockey over the years.

Andreas Tautscher, Chief Country Officer, Deutsche Bank Channel Islands, added: “Thanks to the hard work of the JHA, the Jersey Hockey Development programme is thriving, something that is reflected in the high number of children and range of schools taking part this year’s tournament. The tournament is a prime example of how young people can be given an opportunity through sport to boost their confidence and develop essential life skills.”
