Art in the Frame

Description

Looking over the Bay of St Helier and nestling within the picturesque, charming harbour of St Aubin, whether by car, bus, Le Petit Train or a walk from St Helier, The Harbour Gallery is well worth a visit. It is open 7 days a week, 10.00am - 5.30pm, with free entry.

The Harbour Gallery is constantly moving forward with new exhibition spaces and creative design studios, providing visitors with something new to see on each visit. The Gallery hosts 10 major exhibitions each year and runs an extensive educational programme for adults and children. There are also many other events, the largest being Jersey Textile Showcase in March each year.

The Harbour Gallery has 7 distinct areas:
Gallery 1. Showcasing local art and craft with an enlarging Art and Craft materials section.
Gallery 2. The main exhibition space hosting at least 10 major exhibitions a year. Gallery 3. Upstairs, furniture, jewellery and knitting shop with yarn and textile/accessories, well loved by textile artists, stitchers and knitters.

Up from here go up to the 'Artists Studios' and picture framer, then through to Cameo Café and the popular workspace. Above this we have more studios and artists' shops.

For access around the gallery, there is a Stannah chairlift to the café level and a wheelchair ramp down from Gallery 1 into Gallery 2. Should you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to ask one of the members of staff.

Charity Profile

Art in the Frame Foundation was set up fifteen years ago by two local art teachers who strongly believed in the wealth of local talent in the arts and crafts to be found on the island of Jersey and the severe lack of exhibition space and acknowledgement for this talent.

Being teachers they also realised that the island was very 'cut off' from the fast growing contemporary arts and crafts scene in the UK and Europe.

Two years later Art in the Frame took on charitable status, becoming Art in the Frame Foundation, to help it progress its aims and objectives.

The Aims and Objectives of Art in the Frame Foundation

  • To work in the field of art and craft education by promoting and enhancing the curriculum with opportunities of workshops and talks from highly skilled and regarded tutors in various fields of art and craft for primary, secondary and adult students.
  • To build on relationships with UK and artists from further afield to find opportunities for Jersey artists and craftworkers to exhibit and teach off island.
  • To find a venue which could become an artistic hub for all these activities, to hold exhibitions and workshops, to provide spaces in which to work and a cafe in which to relax and discuss ideas.
  • To develop a website with a directory of artists providing artists and craftworkers the opportunity of an easy online presence to a worldwide audience.
  • To work with the States of Jersey to find opportunities for local artists to exhibit and to receive commissions.
  • To work with Jersey Tourism to promote Jersey as a cultural island of great artistic merit.
  • To work to promote the Genuine Jersey mark on the work of our local craftworkers.

Fundraising

Fundraising will always be a necessity to support our exhibitions, buy new equipment for the gallery, which can be borrowed by artists, and be able to invite visiting artists and craft workers to hold regular workshops and lectures at the gallery. Their expertise has been enjoyed not only by Islanders and visitors of all ages but also, and most importantly, by our primary and secondary school students and those involved in further education.

You can support us by becoming a "Friend of the Harbour Gallery" from only £35 a year.
