Teenage Cancer Trust Jersey, EYECAN, the NSPCC in Jersey and the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) will all receive a share of over £18,000 thanks to donations and fundraising at the Barclays Jersey Boat Show this year.

This is the largest amount raised for charity since the Jersey Boat Show began ten years ago. The three main charities will all receive over £2,400 each and the RNRMC will receive £10,750.

The popular ‘Hook a Duck’ game was a key fundraising element with the newly designed ‘top hat and tails’ duck being a much sought after addition to existing collections.  The money for the RNRMC was raised through an auction and donations at a dinner hosted by Barclays.

The funds raised for Teenage Cancer Trust will go towards the charity’s education and awareness programme for Jersey schools to increase knowledge of cancer in young people and help reduce the delay in diagnosis.

The donation to the NSPCC will go towards a number of services set up to support children and vulnerable families in Jersey.

The Show was also a good opportunity for the charities to promote awareness of their individual causes to the public.

Operations Director at EYECAN Jersey, Jane Vincent, said: “It was great to be a part of the Jersey Boat Show this year. It was a wonderful platform for any charity to raise awareness and especially showcase what we can offer the community. We are extremely grateful to be a beneficiary this year and the funds raised will contribute towards tailored support, activities and social events for people of all ages to help them live independently with sight loss.”

Managing director of Barclays in the Channel Islands, Paul Savery, said: “It’s been great working with Ports of Jersey again this year.  Despite the poor weather conditions, it’s been another successful event, we’ve raised a fantastic amount of money and we are grateful to the Jersey public for supporting these causes.

“Barclays is committed to supporting the wider community through our Shared Growth Ambition which is about working in a way which makes the community where we operate more successful. There was a lot of interest from Show attendees in some of the exciting things we are offering the community, such as LifeSkills, Code Playground and the creative working space at the Barclays Eagle Lab at the Jersey Library.”

The Barclays Jersey Boat Show took place around St Helier Marina over the bank holiday weekend of 29 April to 1 May. The event regularly attracts in excess of 30,000 visitors over the three days but due to the poor weather, attendance levels were slightly down on previous years. The Show welcomed in excess of 12,500 visitors on the Saturday, the Show’s highest first day attendance numbers since the event began in 2008.
