Five local charities that provide support for families in the Island will benefit from the moneys raised by next year’s Lions Club of Jersey Swimarathon.
The Lions Club have chosen the following Jersey charities to be the five principal beneficiaries of the Island’s longest running fundraising event: Brighter Futures, Caring Cooks, the Jersey Centre for Separated Families,Mind Jerseyand Silkworth Lodge. Each charity will receive up to £10,000 from the funds raised.
Lion Mike Berry, president of the Lions Club of Jersey says: ‘Each year since the Swimarathon’s first event in 1972, the Lions have sought to benefit the community it is committed to serve and since then, thanks to the generous support of swimmers and sponsors, we have raised in excess of £3.4 million This year we had tremendous support again for ‘caring for the carers’ and for 2019 we have developed that theme to ‘caring for families’. We conducted a thorough selection process from which the five principal beneficiaries were eventually chosen. We are hopeful that most – if not all! – the teams from this year will swim again in 2019. There were more than 450 teams in the pool last March and we are really pleased that many have already signed up to get wet once more next Spring.’
Other moneys raised by the Swimarathon will go to providing free respite holidays for up to 60 local people at Maison des Landes Hotel (itself a long-term Lions Club of Jersey project) and a wide range of other local community service projects.
The 2019 Swimarathon takes place at Les Quennevais Pool on Wednesday to Sunday 6 to 10 March.
