Caesarean Cycling Club’s Rhys Pilley has broken the longstanding Bouley Ball Hill Climb record to win the 2018 Jersey Cycling Association Hill Climb Championship.

The 38 year record for the hill climb has steadfastly remained at 2:00 minutes, since it was set by Tony Cornic in 1980, despite being targeted by numerous riders. Rhys Pilley has now managed to shave one second off the best time for the course to establish a new course time of 1 minute and 59 seconds.

Nineteen year old Pilley, a former Junior Commonwealth Games rider, has just entered his first season of senior racing. He topped a strong field of contenders at this year’s hill climb championship beating clubmates and Commonwealth Games riders Rhys Hidrio, who placed second in 2:00; and Jack Rebours, finishing third in 2:05.

This win and course record cements a strong end to the season for Pilley, who missed early season racing following injury. Since his return he has been racing in Brittany for CC Plancoet, posting his first win for the club last weekend at La Telhaie Guer Boucles de l’Oyon.

There were other strong rides at the event, with JCA Youth Academy rider Jack Rive beating a number of seniors to place an impressive sixth overall and first junior, in a time of 2:23. First veteran was Big Maggy’s, Vince Peron, a seasoned hill climb specialist, with a quick time of 2:18; and first super vet was clubmate Spencer Moss, with a time of 2:42. CCC’s Carol Derrien was first lady in 3:17.

Rhys Pilley would like to thank CCC Development Fund; Pedal Power; Jersey Sports Foundation; CC Plancoet; and Lynn Minchinton of Plan2Coaching.
